Wood is Vietnam's quiet export giant. In 2024 the sector posted a record, and for project buyers furnishing hotels, residences and fit-outs, Vietnam now rivals China as the default supply base for furniture and panel products.

Export data (recent)

  • Timber and wood products: ~US$16.25 billion in 2024; including non-timber forest products (bamboo, rattan), the wider sector reached ~US$17.5 billion — a record.
  • Plywood: ~3.35 million m³ worth ~US$1.03 billion in 2024, exported mainly to South Korea, Japan, the United States and Malaysia.
  • Furniture (excluding seats): ~US$6.44 billion, about 40% of the total.
  • Top markets: the United States leads by a wide margin (~US$3.45 billion in H1 2024, up ~30% YoY), followed by China, Japan, South Korea and the EU.
  • The industry set an ~US$18 billion target for 2025.

Production capacity & top makers

Vietnam's strength is a deep, fragmented manufacturing base — thousands of workshops and mid-to-large factories clustered around Bình Dương, Đồng Nai and the northern provinces — rather than a few dominant plants. That breadth is why Vietnam can absorb large, varied furniture and wood & plywood orders quickly, but it also means quality and compliance vary widely between factories. Judge a supplier on its certifications and audited capacity, not headline sector numbers.

What it means for project buyers

Two risks dominate:

  1. Origin & trade remedies. US authorities have investigated plywood anti-circumvention (transshipment of Chinese cores finished in Vietnam). A Vietnamese invoice is not enough — you need verifiable Vietnamese manufacture and a supplier that will stand behind it.
  2. Legality & sustainability documentation. For EU projects, EUDR deforestation rules and Vietnam's VNTLAS legality system mean species and legal-harvest paperwork is mandatory, not optional.

Get the FSC/PEFC or legal-harvest certificate, the species declaration, and (for panels) the formaldehyde-emission class (E0/E1/CARB) before you deposit.
